Former Packers TE: Team should call Brett Favre, not Colin Kaepernick

Ever since Aaron Rodgers went down with what now looks to be a season-ending collarbone injury Sunday, rumors have persisted that the Green Bay Packers will look to add a veteran free agent.

While these rumors have been shot down more than once by head coach Mike McCarthy, they still continue to pop up. It even got to the point late Sunday that Brett Favre himself responded to the possibility to returning to save the Packers’ season (more on that here).

There’s also some who have thrown out the idea that Green Bay should reach out to Wisconsin native Colin Kaepernick. But that seems to be more of a pipe dream after the embattled quarterback filed a grievance against NFL owners on Sunday.

If we were to ask former Packers tight end Jermichael Finley who the Packers should sign, the response itself might be a bit surprising.

Well, that’s exactly what TMZ Sports did recently.

“That would never happen in the state of Wisconsin,” Finley told TMZ Sports when asked about Kap signing with the Packers.

For his part, Finley is talking about the conservative nature of Wisconsin and the rust belt. And there’s a point to be had there. How would fans in the Green Bay area react to Kaepernick taking over under center after he started the entire National Anthem protest?

It would definitely be different than the Bay Area, where Kaepernick last played for the San Francisco 49ers.

In terms of a better option, Finley decided that Favre himself made the most sense.

“He (Favre) looks really good, he knows the playbook, he knows the city,” Finley continued. “I think Brett would be a better fit then Colin Kaepernick. Brett Farve is the best decision for the Packers.”

One problem with this. Favre is 48 years old and has not stepped on an NFL field in seven seasons. In fact, he’s old enough to be current Packers starter Brett Hundley’s father.

As it is, the Packers will likely be sticking with Hundley for the remainder of the season. Any talk of the team bringing on another quarterback should be tabled until/if Hundley himself struggles in a starting role.
