Bruce Arians says it’s unlikely David Johnson returns this season

Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson is one of the top NFL players at any position

The Arizona Cardinals enter Week 9’s game against the San Francisco 49ers technically still alive in the NFC Playoff race. At 3-4 on the season, hopes of contention are dwindling by the week. That’s magnified with starting quarterback Carson Palmer on injured reserve.

If fans in Arizona had hoped to receive better news coming out of the team’s bye, that can now be thrown out the window.

In talking about All Pro running back David Johnson and his injury, head coach Bruce Arians didn’t sound overly optimistic.

The third-year running back has been out since Week 1 with a dislocated wrist. At the time of the injury, Arians seemed confident Johnson would be able to return this season. But when the team traded for Adrian Peterson, this possibility seemed less likely.

One has to wonder if the situation might be different if the Cardinals were in better standing in the NFC West. They currently sit two games behind both the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams in the division.

Johnson, 25, is coming off a spectacular sophomore campaign that saw him put up over 2,100 total yards 20 touchdowns, both NFL highs from the running back position. With him out of action, Arizona currently boasts the worst rushing attack in the NFL.
