Oakland Raiders pass rusher Aldon Smith might not be returning to the field anytime soon. But he was able to avoid jail time stemming from a 2015 arrest on DUI hit and run charges.

According to TMZ Sports, Smith pled no contest to the hit and run while seeing the DUI charges dropped.

“He initially pled not guilty to misdemeanor DUI and hit and run — but now, we’ve learned he cut a deal with prosecutors in which he pled no contest to hit and run and the DUI charge was dropped,” the report read.

Smith was sentenced to 20 days in jail, but the judge will allow him to do residential treatment in lieu of serving said time. He is tasked with remaining alcohol free and will have to undergo anger management classes as part of the plea.

The former San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowler has not played in an NFL game since 2015. He’s currently suspended indefinitely for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Hopefully, this acts as a wake-up call for a player that was among the best young defenders in the NFL during his heyday with the 49ers. Then again, just how many chances can one man be given?

We’ll find out here soon.
