Report: Christian Hackenberg has yet to practice with Jets’ first-string offense

Jets quarterbacks Josh McCown Bryce Petty Christian Hackenberg New York Jets NFL training camp

It’s looking more and more like New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles is going to roll with Josh McCown at quarterback, rather than Christian Hackenberg.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Hackenberg still hasn’t practiced with the first-team offense during training camp.

“Todd Bowles has tried to sell the idea that Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty will each have a fair opportunity to win the starting job, but only Kool-Aid guzzlers of the highest order would buy that at the moment,” Mehta wrote Monday morning.

“McCown has worked exclusively with the starters through the first seven practices, while Hackenberg has taken second-team reps.”

So much for the alleged quarterback competition.

Mehta reports Hackenberg has yet to throw an interception during camp, which is impressive. However, he also says Hackenberg has taken far too many sacks, which is bad.

The Jets have been saying recently that the Penn State product has made significant strides this offseason. That’s good, because what one scout saw when he rolled back the preseason tape from last summer blew him away, in the worst possible way.

Bowles has continued to tell reporters the Jets don’t have a starter yet. But based on all the evidence collected so far, that’s just not true. Bowles is going to go with the mediocre veteran, rather than risk embarrassment with the erratic second-year passer who’s claim to fame in the NFL so far is hitting reporters with balls on the sidelines.
