Report: Cavaliers called Warriors about Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson swap

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson wants to be with the team for the long haul.

The Cleveland Cavaliers ended up receiving a massive haul from the Boston Celtics in exchange for disgruntled All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving. That haul includes fellow All-Star Isaiah Thomas and a highly sought-after first-round pick, originally from the Brooklyn Nets.

But it now looks like the Cavaliers were attempting to make a trade with the defending champion Golden State Warriors, the team Cleveland has faced in the Finals the past three years.

According to ESPN’s Marc Spears, new Cavs general manager Koby Altman called the Warriors up about swapping Irving for Klay Thompson.

“He (Altman) did call the uninterested Warriors about Klay Thompson,” Spears reported.

If the NBA offseason hasn’t been crazy enough, imagine if that actually happened. Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving in the same backcourt. Klay Thompson moving on to the team he’s battled in June the past three years.

While the Warriors were not interested in this trade, it surely tells us a story of a first-year Cavaliers general manager that’s not afraid to make the bold move. Tuesday’s trade with Boston was a prime example of this.
