Jets name Josh McCown starting QB

Jets quarterbacks Josh McCown Bryce Petty Christian Hackenberg New York Jets NFL training camp

In the least shocking news of the day, the New York Jets have named Josh McCown the starting quarterback heading into Week 1.

Head coach Todd Bowles made the announcement Monday but refused to say whether McCown would be the starter throughout the season.

This was always going to be the result. Bryce Petty had the best chance to unseat McCown but was injured in preseason Week 3. Christian Hackenberg embarrassed himself in his two big preseason chances, showing everyone he’s not an NFL-caliber quarterback right now.

McCown was simply the lesser of three evils in the end. An experienced veteran who has been always no better than mediocre, he will be the bridge upon which New York builds its next road to a franchise quarterback (or so it’s supposed to go).

The simple truth is that it doesn’t matter who starts for the Jets this year. This team is tanking. It’s tanking hard.
