The young New York Yankees may be in the midst of a surprising season, but it has not come without some headaches. Starter Michael Pineda is set to undergo Tommy John surgery and will likely miss at least the next calendar year. Meanwhile, the Yankees themselves have lost 20 of their past 29 games after being a season-high 15 games over .500 back in mid June.
Now comes this piece if information indicating that young first baseman Greg Bird will have to undergo ankle surgery, sidelining him for at least the next six weeks.

Bird, 24, has not played since May 1st after going through multiple issues with his ankle. The young power hitter had posted a disastrous .100 average in 60 at-bats prior to the injury.
Entering the 2017 campaign, Bird was expected to play a huge role in the emergence of this young Yankees team with the likes of fellow youngsters Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez. Now that he’s out at least through August, that’s unlikely going to be the case moving forward on the season.
