Jonathan Stewart: Nobody in NFL can cover Christian McCaffrey 1-on-1

Christian McCaffrey Carolina Panthers training camp

The superlatives continue to flow out from everyone who watches Carolina Panthers rookie running back Christian McCaffrey in action. This includes his own teammates, who gushed about his abilities during OTAs and minicamp.

Now that he’s had a chance to wow in training camp, he’s continuing to impress his new peers, including fellow running back Jonathan Stewart.

Stewart, who is listed as the team’s starting running back, doesn’t think anyone in the league will be able to cover McCaffrey by himself.

At least during his first season, McCaffrey might be utilized more as a receiver than pure running back. Stewart is still highly effective between the tackles and, if healthy, should handle at least 15 carries per game.

Though, based on the amount of screen and short passes McCaffrey’s been fed during training camp, one reporter wrote it’s “obvious” the Panthers have “big plans” for the rookie out of Stanford.

Along with fellow rookie, Curtis Samuel, McCaffrey should help make Cam Newton’s life a lot easier in the passing game. It’s going to be fascinating to see if the quarterback can adapt, especially in light of recent comments he made responding to the team’s desire to see him run less and throw quicker.
