Colts still don’t know if Andrew Luck will be ready for training camp

Andrew Luck may or may not be ready to practice at the start of Indianapolis Colts training camp, which starts at the end of July.

As of Monday, July 10, Kevin Bowen of the team’s official website noted, “Sitting here today, we still do not know if Andrew Luck has already started the throwing portion of his shoulder rehab, or if that timeline still has not been reached.”

It’s not time to panic just yet. And Bowen gave some good reasons for this, despite the uncertainty of Luck’s recovery time.

“Judging by Jim Irsay’s comments last month, Luck’s upbeat outlook and no veteran quarterback signed this offseason, there’s plenty of evidence indicating that No. 12 should be okay for Week One.”

Luck underwent offseason shoulder surgery to repair damage he suffered way back in Week 2 of the 2015 season. He toughed out the injury, among others, the past two years, which had a lot to do with the downturn in his production.

It’s been seven months since Luck threw a football, if he hasn’t started throwing yet. That’s a long, long time, and it’s going to take a fair amount of time for him to regain full strength of his arm once he does resume throwing and begins that portion of his rehab in earnest.

If Luck somehow isn’t ready to start in Week 1, then it will likely fall to veteran Scott Tolzien to start in his place. That’s not great news. In limited action last year, Tolzien threw one touchdown and two interceptions in 37 attempts.

Needless to say, the Colts hope they get Luck back sooner, rather than later.
