Ravens get crazy value with $11 million Jeremy Maclin contract

Jeremy Maclin

Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin signed with the Baltimore Ravens on Monday after he visited with both the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore the prior week.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Maclin’s new deal is worth just $11 million for two years. Maclin will receive $6 million guaranteed, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Clearly, the Ravens are making out like bandits with such a conservative offering in exchange for a receiver of Maclin’s caliber.

Comparatively speaking, the Chicago Bears recently signed wide receiver Markus Wheaton to nearly the same deal.

Wheaton, an original third-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2013, played in only three games in 2016. He tallied a mere 51 yards and scored one touchdown. Wheaton’s career-high season was in 2015 when he recorded 749 yards and five touchdowns.

Maclin on the other hand, is a former first-round draft pick, and he put up tremendous numbers with the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs in 2014-15. During that stretch, he recorded 172 catches for 2,406 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Unfortunately, Maclin had a bit of a down season in 2016, which likely caused his perceived value to drop. He was eventually released by the Chiefs but quickly swept up by the Ravens.

Maclin makes for an excellent, salary-cap friendly addition to the Ravens’ receiving corps that is now minus the retired Steve Smith Sr.
