Jeff Hornacek won’t say whether he wants Carmelo Anthony next year

Jeff Hornacek

New York Knicks head coach Jeff Hornacek was asked a direct question about whether he wants Carmelo Anthony on the roster next season.

And he punted, saying it’s a managerial decision.

“Carmelo’s a great player. The guy can really score the ball. So that’s a management decision that comes and us coaches, we coach who they give us,” he said, per Ian Begley of ESPN.

Either Hornacek doesn’t want Anthony on the roster and has no backbone about it, or he wants Anthony on the team but is not willing to take a stand for his guy. Either way you look at it, this response is not a good look for a head coach who was brought on board by the recently departed Phil Jackson.

Anthony reportedly is on the radar of the Houston Rockets, and the Knicks reportedly still want to trade him even with Jackson out of the picture.

Obviously, Anthony can poo-poo any potential trade that forms, because he has that no-trade clause in his contract. He’s the one in the driver’s seat right now, so it might not even be a “management decision,” at all in the end.

It’s going to be fascinating to see how this all plays out in the coming weeks.
