Brett Favre has entertained thoughts about coaching, being GM in NFL

Could Brett Favre make another NFL comeback? Well, the thought has crossed his mind.

Speaking with ESPN Wisconsin’s Wilde & Tausch on Thursday, Favre admitted he’s pondered a return to the NFL as a coach or general manager.

“That type of stuff has crossed my mind,” said Favre, 47, per ESPN’s Jason Wilde. “Because it’s no different to me than coaching. It’s being involved in the game in some aspect.”

Favre has already gotten his feet wet as a coach, having spent two years at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, following his retirement.

“When I coached high school football for two years, it really wasn’t on my radar,” Favre said. “My dad did it for many, many, many years, [but] I thought, ‘I just don’t have anything left in the tank from a competitive side. What type of coach would I be?’

“I always thought I would be a good coach, but I didn’t know if I had the effort in me. Well, I did. I’ll tell you what, it was a joy. The competitive spirit came right back. It was obviously different than playing, and so I had a lot of fun.”

The legendary gunslinger admitted that a front-office position would be more difficult, “because there’s such a business side to it.”

If he does return to the NFL it seems like coaching is his best option. He would love the chance to impart the vast well of knowledge he’s accumulated over the years. Furthermore, he feels like if he doesn’t “coach or work at that level” during his life it would be a waste of said knowledge.

The biggest thing keeping Favre from pursuing this line of thinking at this point in his life is that he doesn’t want to miss his daughter, Breleigh, playing volleyball. He said he’s “not really thinking about it” until that comes to an end.

Not every former player makes for a good coach or general manager. But we’ve certainly seen plenty of success stories, too. Favre’s passion for the game is infectious, and he no longer has to ask Ty Detmer what a nickel defense is.

So, he really could have a positive impact on an NFL team if that’s what he chooses to pursue down the road.
