Report: Patriots not interested in trading for Richard Sherman

So much for the idea that Richard Sherman could become the next Darrelle Revis for the New England Patriots and help them win a championship in 2017. Amid rumors that Bill Belichick and Co. were interested in potentially making a deal for the Legion of Boom star cornerback, a new report indicates it’s just not going to happen.

“The Patriots won’t be in the Richard Sherman business this offseason. They are not interested in trading for him, according to a source,” wrote Tom E. Curran of CSN New England Thursday morning.

Perhaps this opens the door all the more for the Oakland Raiders, who are reportedly very interested in acquiring the All-Pro defensive back (more on that here).

Likely, there are other teams that would be interested in at least covertly pursuing such a trade. Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider made it abundantly clear Sherman is trade bait in a recent interview, and it’s even been reported that Sherman himself is the one responsible for all the trade talks in the first place.

Apparently, he wants out of Seattle, if you believe that.

Back to New England, the big reason it seemed feasible in the first place the Pats might actually pull the trigger on a trade for Sherman is that Malcolm Butler still hasn’t signed his first-round tender. However, per Mike Giardi of CSNNE.com, Butler is coming to the realization that he won’t be traded and that signing his tender is basically his only real option to play in 2017.

So with free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore locked up on an expensive deal and Butler almost assuredly coming back, there’s just no room for the 29-year-old Seahawks cornerback, who carries an $13.6 million cap hit with him.
