Bill O’Brien: Tom Savage could be long-term answer at QB for Texans

Texans, Tom Savage

News of Tony Romo’s decision to retire rocked the NFL community Tuesday morning, and perhaps no team was impacted more than the Houston Texans. However, whether you buy this or not Bill O’Brien says he’s Tom Savage has what it takes to be the long-term answer.

Though, it’s worth pointing out that Savage has something to prove other than his talent if he’s going to be that guy for Houston.

An intriguing prospect when he came out of college in 2014, Savage has started just two games for Houston since then. He went 1-1 in those games, completing 60.9 percent of his passes for 588 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

We’d be foolish to count anyone out. But based on early returns, there is just as much a chance Savage ends up another in a long line of disappointments in Houston as there is he’ll end up being the long-term answer.

At this point, there are a just few other options available to the Texans that might end up working out better in the long run (more on that here). But given the fact Houston isn’t likely to sign Colin Kaepernick and doesn’t pick until No. 25 overall, the team might be relegated to using Savage, period.

So, while it’s nice that O’Brien is throwing his support behind Savage, he might be doing the only thing he can do at this point. Excited or not about heading into the 2017 season with Savage and Brandon Weeden, they’re all he’s got right now.
