Anquan Boldin to play in 2017, Ravens and Lions among the suitors

Anquan Boldin

Wide receiver Anquan Boldin expects to return for a 15th season in the NFL. That’s not necessarily too big of a surprise. Though, CBS Sports is reporting that the Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions are among the teams interested in his services.

Lions general manager Bob Quinn previously indicated that Boldin returning to the team for a second season “is definitely an option.” Meanwhile, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh has clearly indicated that he would support the former Pro Bowler returning to Baltimore.

Both teams have a need at the wide receiver position. Detroit has to find a third wideout — a position Boldin filled last year with 67 receptions and 584 yards. Bringing the veteran back makes sense — he already knows the system and had nice chemistry with quarterback Matthew Stafford last season.

As for the Ravens, it’s unclear whether Boldin would be the second or third option. With Steve Smith Sr. retired and Kamar Aiken having moved on in free agency, Breshad Perriman (health pending) and Mike Wallace will be competing for targets. Boldin could go right into that mix. However, general manager Ozzie Newsome may be wary of having Wallace and Boldin, two 30-plus year old receivers on the roster together.

Boldin has shown that he can be productive in a smaller role. So, if he wants to play, it’s tough to make an argument against adding him.
