Report: Warriors to sign Matt Barnes following Kevin Durant injury

Matt Barnes

There’s no official confirmation regarding the seriousness of the injury Kevin Durant suffered Tuesday night, but it sure doesn’t look good.

That’s only magnified by the fact that the Golden State Warriors are reportedly going to sign veteran forward Matt Barnes to help add depth to the wing position as the season progresses.

Durant immediately exited Golden State’s loss to the Washington Wizards early on Tuesday with a knee injury after teammate Zaza Pachulia was thrown into him by Wizards center Marcin Gortat. Durant clutched for his knee, eventually heading to the locker room for further testing. Within minutes, Golden State ruled the former MVP out with a hyper-extended left knee (more on that here).

Durant is expected to undergo an MRI on Wednesday.

Considering Barnes will be signed for the remainder of the season and not on a 10-day contract, it seems to suggest that Durant’s injury is of the longer-term variety.

Barnes, 36, was waived by the Sacramento Kings back in February after the team needed to clear a roster spot following the DeMarcus Cousins trade. He’s averaging 7.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game this season.

We’ll surely have updates as the results of Durant’s MRI come in on Wednesday.
