Report: Rams CB Trumaine Johnson signs $16.7 million franchise tag

Trumaine Johnson

Barring any long-term deal brokered with the Los Angeles Rams this offseason, Trumaine Johnson will earn $16.7 million in 2017.

The cornerback has reportedly signed his franchise tag, which means that sum is fully guaranteed.

The Rams had previously said the decision whether to tag Johnson was one of grave importance. In the end, they didn’t want to lose their best cornerback for the second straight season after watching Janoris Jenkins land a big-money deal with the New York Giants in 2016.

A very solid cover corner, Johnson has tallied 16 interceptions the past five seasons with the Rams. His breakout campaign came in 2015 when he tallied seven interceptions, returning one of them for a touchdown playing opposite Jenkins. While his 2016 numbers paled in comparison, he continued his strong play and will be in line to make even more money in the future, barring injury.
