Report: Browns looking to ‘make another run’ at Jimmy Garoppolo

Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo?

The Cleveland Browns are apparently not done chasing after New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who has been on their radar a while now.

“An NFL source familiar with all the principals involved speculated the Browns ‘would make another run’ at Garoppolo at the league meetings,” wrote Grossi last week. “There, Patriots owner Robert Kraft and coach Bill Belichick could interact in person — rather than via telephone — with Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and chief deal-maker Sashi Brown, the club’s executive vice president of football operations.”

Following up on that earlier report, Grossi wrote Monday morning that the Browns would likely be pursuing a conversation with Belichick to pursue trade talks with him about Garoppolo.

Belichick won’t be in Arizona long. He’s leaving after Monday’s meetings to scout prospects, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss — an altogether unsurprising move given his penchant for building his team through the draft.

It’s been reported for quite a while now that the Patriots will need a veritable buried Vikings treasure in any potential trade exchange for Garoppolo (details here). It’s also been reported that Belichick is inclined to keep Garoppolo for insurance, just in case anything should happen to Brady, who will be 40 when the 2017 season begins.

The Browns would be foolish to play Belichick’s game for a quarterback who has just two career starts under his belt. And giving up the farm for Garoppolo seems to go against everything Sashi Brown has accomplished thus far.

Still, landing a franchise quarterback is the biggest key to any team’s puzzle, and it’s going to be interesting to see what happens next on this front.
