Report: Matt Schaub could follow Kyle Shanahan to the 49ers

Matt Schaub

As his Atlanta Falcons prepare to take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI on Sunday, Kyle Shanahan remains busy building a staff and a blueprint for the offseason.

Shanahan is expected to be named the San Francisco 49ers’ head coach as soon as Monday. It will be the offensive coordinator’s first head coaching job. It will also see him dealing with a vastly different quarterback situation than what he has in NFL MVP Matt Ryan with the Falcons.

Colin Kaepernick is expected to opt out of his contract. Meanwhile, both Christian Ponder and Blaine Gabbert are set to become free agents. Needless to say, the 49ers will be looking for multiple quarterbacks.

Now, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it’s possibly that Shanahan could bring veteran Matt Schaub with him to San Francisco.

Per the report.

“Atlanta Falcons backup quarterback Matt Schaub could be following Atlanta offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to San Francisco, if the man poised to become the new 49ers head coach has his way, according to league sources.”

This wouldn’t be a huge surprise. Shanahan and Schaub have worked together for some time now. Schaub was the Houston Texans’ starter in 2008 and 2009 when Shanahan headed the team’s offense. In fact, he put up a career year in that role back in 2009, leading the league in completions, attempts and passing yards.

Three-plus years removed from being a viable starter in the NFL, Schaub likely would head to San Francisco as nothing more than a backup. Depending on how the situation itself plays out, he could also be a stop-gap option for Shanahan. A familiar face that understands his offense.
