Report: Redskins won’t trade Kirk Cousins in 2017

Kirk Cousins

The Washington Redskins will not be trading Kirk Cousins to the San Francisco 49ers, or any other team, according to Ian Rapoport.

This will likely end the speculation over Cousins’ destination, though its possible that this isn’t over just yet. With Kyle Shanahan reportedly expected to push hard for Cousins (more on that here), there’s always a chance that Redskins GM Scot McCloughan could be knocked over by a San Francisco offer.

However, this report signals internal commitment to Cousins, at least in the near future, while he plays out his exclusive franchise tag this season. Will it result in a long-term deal for the passer? That remains to be seen, and it’s been reported Cousins isn’t exactly keen on staying in Washington past this upcoming season.

Cousins has passed for over 9,000 yards with 54 touchdowns and just 23 interceptions the past two years.

If he has another outstanding year and plays it out on the tag, then we can expect Cousins to hit the open market in 2018, when he’ll likely challenge the record for biggest contract in NFL history.
