Raiders to host the Patriots in Mexico City next season

NFL Mexico City

The Oakland Raiders may be a team without a long-term home, but at least they will be playing in Mexico City for the second consecutive season when 2017 comes calling.

In his annual state of the league press conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that the Raiders will play host to the New England Patriots in Mexico next season (via NFL.com).

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. There were rumors that a Raiders-Patriots matchup on foreign soil could be in the cards.

With how well each team performed this season, it might very well be a heck of a game. Oakland finished the regular season with a 12-4 mark while the Patriots will be playing in Super Bowl LI this upcoming Sunday after finishing the regular year with just two losses.

Oakland was triumphant in NFL’s return to Mexico City this past November, beating the Houston Texans by the score of 27-20. The game itself was also a smashing success. In the first ever Monday Night Football game outside of the United States, the matchup at Estadio Azteca drew north of 75,000 fans.

Goodell surely knows the thirst for football down south is real.

“We have a tremendous fan base in Mexico,” Goodell said. “Their passion for football is inspiring, and we look forward to another memorable game in Mexico City between two great teams next season.”

Let’s just hope the politics between Mexico and the United States doesn’t end what could end up being a tremendous annual tradition. That would be unfortunate.
