Report: DeMarcus Cousins intends on signing extension with Kings

DeMarcus Cousins trade

So much for the next month or so around Kings land surrounding DeMarcus Cousins trade talk. According to a report from CSN California, the enigmatic big man intends on signing a massive long-term extension with the Sacramento Kings when he hits free agency this upcoming summer.

“CSN California has confirmed through a league source that the two sides have tossed around numbers and that barring a late change in direction by either side, Cousins intends to sign a massive, max-money extension, estimated at roughly $207 million during the offseason,” the report read.

If this doesn’t seem to make much sense, that’s because it doesn’t.

While ultra talented, Cousins’ six-plus year tenure with the Kings has been defined by on-court antics, issues with the team’s front office and run-ins with multiple head coaches.

Seen as a passionate figure, Cousins is the obvious face of the Kings franchise. He also brings more dirty laundry than the subject of a Carrie Underwood hit song. Heck, here’s a guy that’s seemingly called out his own organization multiple times in the past.

On the court, it goes without saying that Cousins is among the most-talented bigs in the entire game. The All-Star is averaging 28.1 points and 9.9 rebounds this season. If he continues at this pace, it would represent the third consecutive season that Cousins has averaged 24-plus points.

Able to receive more money from the Kings than any other team on the open market, Cousins is now set to cash in big time. He’s also going to be the man Sacramento builds around over the long term. That seemed to be nothing more than a remote possibility just a couple short months ago.
