Jason Garrett refuses to commit to Dak Prescott as starter

The Dallas Cowboys are eliminated from the playoffs. But with Dak Prescott, they at least have a certain future at the quarterback position, right?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Head coach Jason Garrett is not willing to go there right now.

Garrett may not want to talk about it now. In all honesty, that’s fine. But a time will come for him to discuss his team’s quarterback position. When that happens, “Dak is our starter” is the only logical thing to say.

Prescott was stellar in his rookie season.

He completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 3,667 yards, 23 touchdowns and four interceptions for a passer rating of 104.9. Prescott also provided value with his legs, rushing for 282 yards and six scores.

We could stop there. Prescott’s 2016 performance should be more than enough to make him the starter for 2017. But in reality, there’s so much more.

Dak Prescott will be 24 during the 2017 season. Tony Romo will be 37. Prescott doesn’t have any serious lingering injury concerns. Various injuries have kept Romo sidelined for nearly two full seasons. Prescott is a minuscule cap hit, ringing in at $635,848. meanwhile, Romo is set make $24.7 million in 2017.

Garrett may not want to talk about it right now. But Prescott is not simply the best starting quarterback option for the Cowboys. In truth, he’s the only option.
