Report: Derek Carr out 6-8 weeks after surgery on Tuesday

Derek Carr

Derek Carr won’t be available to the Oakland Raiders the rest of the way this season and well into the postseason after he broke his fibula on Saturday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the quarterback is undergoing surgery on Tuesday in Los Angeles and will likely be out the next six to eight weeks.

That means that even if Carr did come back on the short end of that timetable he might be able to play around the middle of February. Super Bowl LI is taking place on February 5 in Houston.

Carr was having an MVP season for the Raiders before exiting Saturday’s game in pain and in tears. He completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 3,933 yards with 28 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Oakland will now have to count on backup Matt McGoin the rest of the way. A career 58.3 percent passer who has thrown 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, he’s clearly a huge step down, meaning the running game and defense will have to step up in a huge way for Oakland to continue its winning ways.

The Raiders have a final game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, with the No. 1 seed potentially up for grabs in the AFC.
