Is Gary Kubiak preparing to resign as head coach of the Broncos?

After failing to get the Denver Broncos back to the playoffs following a win in Super Bowl 50, could head coach Gary Kubiak be considering resignation?

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, that’s a definite possibility.

And when asked about the rumor on Friday, Kubiak did nothing to deny or squash it, opting instead to say he’s focusing on the team’s upcoming game against the Oakland Raiders.

“I love this league,” Kubiak said in response to a question about his desire to continue in the job (h/t Broncos official website). “I love the Broncos. I love the work, you know? You know, I’m all in on the Raiders right now. There will be time for reflection and all that stuff next week, but right now it’s time to focus on what we’re doing.”

Kubiak is a former NFL player who spent his entire nine-year career with the Broncos. He has been coaching in the NFL since 1994 when he cut his teeth as the quarterback coach of the San Francisco 49ers under George Seifert.

Unfortunately, health has been an issue for Kubiak in recent years. He collapsed walking towards the locker room in a game against the Indianapolis Colts in 2013 when he was still with the Houston Texans. This year he missed a game in October after being hospitalized with a “complex migraine.”

With that in mind, and given the way he failed to say he’s going to be back with the Broncos in 2017, it wouldn’t be surprising whatsoever if Kubiak does resign after the 2017 season. This would open up a surprising vacancy in the head coaching market, which figures to be robust this upcoming year.
