Jerry Jones: ‘There’s a lot of difference between Tony Romo and Mark Sanchez’

Jerry Jones

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has had some glorious one-liners in his day. The always interesting public commentator added another one to this laundry list on Thursday.

When talking about Tony Romo’s future with the Dallas Cowboys after the former Pro Bowler resigned himself to backup duties, Jones wanted to make sure we knew there was a difference between Romo and another Cowboys signal caller.

In the process, he might have very well told Mark Sanchez that he didn’t exist.

“There’s a lot of difference between Tony Romo and Mark Sanchez, guys,” Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. “That’s speaking candidly.”

It sure is, Mr. Jones.

The larger conversation was about Romo’s future in Dallas with Dak Prescott absolutely lighting the world on fire for the 8-1 Cowboys.

“It’s not a goodbye,” Jones said of Romo. “I think Tony has five years left of really competing for a Super Bowl. I believe Tony will be the quareterback on a Super Bowl team. I believe that strongly. We’re talking generic now, and I have no plans for him not to be part of the Dallas Cowboys. Not a consideration.”

Jones made sure to backtrack after the initial part of this statement. Could Romo be a Super Bowl quarterback on a NFL team? Surely, he’s been one of the most effective signal callers in the NFL over the past decade. Will that be with the Cowboys? This is the major question that needs to be answered.

Despite Jones indicating that there are no plans for Romo “not to be part of the Dallas Cowboys,” there surely are financial implications the organization must look at here.

Romo is set to earn $24.7 million next season and has a dead cap hit of just under $20 million. This means the Cowboys would be absolutely foolish to release the former Pro Bowler. Though, the same foolishness would exist if they employed a near $25 million backup quarterback, leading to questions that a trade could be in the works during the spring.

Either way, we’re pretty sure where Jones and the Cowboys stand on Mark Sanchez. He’s employed to hold a clipboard this season and has no real future with the organization beyond that.

“Collect your check and never talk to me again.”
