Cody Kessler to remain Browns’ starting quarterback

Cody Kessler

What do the Cleveland Browns have to lose besides another seven games this season? Following a 35-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Clevelands boasts a 0-9 record and could potentially end the season without a win.

Obviously looking to the future, Cleveland has apparently decided that rookie quarterback Cody Kessler will remain the starter over veteran Josh McCown.

It really is a smart move for Cleveland. While the team would sure love to avoid futility we’ve only seen one time in the history of the NFL, there’s no real reason for the team to go with McCown moving forward. He’s not part of the long-term picture in Cleveland and possesses very little upside as a starter in the NFL.

Despite team-wide struggles Sunday against a red-hot Cowboys team, Kessler wasn’t terrible. He completed 19-of-27 passes for 203 yards with a touchdown and zero picks. The USC product has now thrown five touchdowns and just one pick while completing nearly 68 percent of his passes in six starts this season.

At the very least, starting Kessler for the remainder of the season enables Cleveland to get a firm understanding of where he is and whether the team needs to target a quarterback at the top of the 2017 NFL Draft.
