Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith won’t be losing his job to a concussion for the second time in his career. After missing Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the veteran quarterback will start for Kansas City when they take on the Carolina Panthers next week.

This really shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise considering just how much success Kansas City has had with Smith under center. Prior to missing Sunday’s game, he had led to the team to a 15-2 record in his past 17 starts. Overall, the Chiefs boast a 35-18 record with Smith under center since he came over from San Francisco back in 2013.
With Smith out of action Sunday against the Jaguars, backup Nick Foles filled in well. The former Philadelphia Eagles and St. Louis Rams starter completed 20-of-33 passes with one touchdown and zero picks in a 19-14 win over the Jags. This came on the heels of Foles performing extremely well in relief of Smith the previous week.
At the very least, the now 6-2 Chiefs know they have a capable backup should the injury bug hit Smith again moving forward this season. But for now, Smith remains the team’s starter for the long haul. Head coach Andy Reid pretty much confirmed this on Monday.
