Sean Payton advocating reviews for pass interference

NFL head coaches

As it so often is, pass interference (or lack thereof) has been a popular topic following Sunday’s Week 6 action. New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton made his opinion known, saying that he wants those penalties reviewed.

“It has been (discussed) and for good reason, and let’s hope that that at some point is (addressed) sooner than later,” Payton said, per Josh Katzenstein of The TimesPicayune. “Listen, it’s been brought up and discussed by a number of clubs, and I think the Competition Committee needs to spend a lot more time thinking about that specific call is so critical to get right. These interferences that are at the end zone become 1-yard line handoffs.”

It’s hard to argue much with Payton here.

Granted, Atlanta Falcons’ coach Dan Quinn is correct in saying that “usually one play doesn’t define” a game. Over 60 minutes, several plays are made (or not made) to impact the end result.

With that said, getting the right call on a pass interference is really no less important than getting it right on a catch/no-catch. These are incredibly important calls. In a league that wants to get the calls right, adding replay here would take a lot of heat off of the officials.
