Chargers GM won’t deny report that Mike McCoy is coaching for his job

The San Diego Chargers face a crucial test Thursday night against the division-rival Denver Broncos. A loss in front of a national television audience would push San Diego to 1-5 on the season. Since the 1966 AFL-NFL merger, only two teams have earned a playoff spot after losing five of six to start a season.

For the Chargers, this division battle is apparently taking on even larger significance. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported prior to the team’s latest meltdown this past Sunday that head coach Mike McCoy could be coaching for his job over the next two games (more on that here).

Now that San Diego dropped another brutal one-score game to the Oakland Raiders, Thursday could potentially be McCoy’s last stand with the team.

That’s something Chargers general manager Tom Telesco refused to deny on Thursday.

Way to show some confidence in your head coach.

Of course, there’s no real reason for the Chargers’ brass to have confidence in their head coach. Since the start of last season, San Diego boasts a 5-16 record. They are also 3-13 in games that have been decided by one score.

McCoy’s last stand will come Thursday against the defending champion Broncos in San Diego. Should the Chargers fail to come out on top here, the head coach could very well be without a job in short order.
