Chargers CB Jason Verrett fears he has torn ligament in knee

Jason Verrett

With his team slated to take on the surprising Oakland Raiders this upcoming Sunday, San Diego Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett is dealing with some troubling news.

According to multiple media reports, the former first-round pick fears that he has a torn ligament in his knee.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter goes on to report that Verrett has potentially been playing through the torn ligament.

One of the top cover guys in the NFL, this could very well explain Verrett’s Week 3 struggles against T.Y. Hilton and the Indianapolis Colts. The young corner allowed five catches for 135 yards against Indy’s top receiver in the narrow Chargers’ loss.

There’s a few things of note here. All extremely important to the Chargers’ success moving forward.

We have no idea what ligament it might be. If it’s a torn ACL, Verrett will be done for the season. At this point, Verrett and the Chargers have to be hoping it’s to the MCL, which would potentially enable him to return this season.

It’s the latest blow to a struggling Chargers team that’s been dealt its fair share of injuries this season. Remember, both Keenan Allen and Danny Woodhead were lost for the season after suffering separate ACL injuries back in September.

If the team were to lose Verrett, it would be a huge blow moving forward on the year. He’s the Chargers’ top corner, and the only one capable of going up against opposing teams’ No. 1 receivers.

That would have taken place against Amari Cooper and the surprising 3-1 Raiders this week.
