Report: Ronnie Hillman unlikely to make the Broncos

Even after putting up nearly 1,000 total yards and seven touchdowns for the defending champs last season, it looks like Ronnie Hillman might not last through the summer.

According to Mike Klis of 9 News, the running back will likely be cut by the Denver Broncos before the start of the regular season.

This is somewhat surprising considering the Broncos’ situation in the backfield. One would think that the team might want to overload on running backs with its questionable quarterback situation (more on that here).

Add in the fact that Hillman was Denver’s most-productive running back a season ago, and this seems to be coming a bit out of left field.

Though, it’s important to note that Hillman himself has been bypassed by rookie fourth-round pick Devontae Booker on the Broncos’ depth chart. This has the veteran now No. 3 in the pecking order behind Booker and incumbent starter C.J. Anderson.

Also important to note is the fact that Hillman has a non-guaranteed contract that’s slated to pay him $1.4 million this upcoming season. Should Denver release him, it will get out from under said contract.

More than anything, this could be an indication that the Broncos are sold on Booker to be the primary backup to Anderson as a rookie. That in and of itself could be a good thing for the Broncos.

As it relates to Hillman, the expectation here has to be that Denver will look for a trade partner before releasing the veteran. Should that not come to fruition, the former third-round pick will likely find himself out of a job.
