Heading into the first week of NFL preseason action, the Denver Broncos aren’t making it easy to read the tea leaves about who will start at quarterback. Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian have been reportedly named co-starters heading into the first game against the Chicago Bears.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk passed along this information, as did Mike Klis of 9News in Denver.
What this means is that preseason games will have everything to do with who emerges as the starter heading into Week 1. It was reported before training camp that Sanchez had a slight edge, and that may still be the case.
The one player who is still on the outside looking in is obviously rookie Paxton Lynch. He recently said he thinks he has a chance to be the starter for the opening weekend (more on that here), and he might still be right. Head coach Gary Kubiak recently lauded his rookie for stepping up big in practice.
However, right now it’s clear Kubiak feels veteran Sanchez and second-year pro Siemian have a better grasp of the offense and have the best chance of leading it early in the season.
Hold on, Broncos fans. This ride is apt to get crazier before it settles down, which may honestly never happen during the 2016 campaign.
