Report: Abusing codeine, Rolando McClain return to Cowboys ‘almost impossible’

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Rolando McClain isn’t likely to return to the team, based on a report in which it was revealed he has been abusing codeine.

Jason Cole of Bleacher Report noted on Tuesday that the Cowboys’ starting inside linebacker’s return is “almost impossible.”

“The unfortunate story with linebacker Rolando McClain, who is currently on a 10-game suspension from the NFL, is that he’s abusing a codeine-based drug called ‘purple drank.’ What it basically is is a combination of Sprite and codeine, or cough syrup, in this case, that leaves it with a purple color.

“It also is ingested constantly, and victims of using this often gain lots and lots of weight. That’s exactly what is happening in McClain’s case, where he’s gained approximately 40 pounds, according to those two sources, and he is incredibly out of shape at this time.”

This is extremely unfortunate news.

The Cowboys gave McClain another shot at an NFL career after he was jettisoned out of the Oakland Raiders organization in 2013 after a slew of off-field incidents.

Things appeared to be looking up for the linebacker, who started 23 games for Dallas the past two seasons and was slated to be the starting inside linebacker before being tagged with his 10-game ban this offseason for violating the NFL’s drug policy.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones recently expressed disappointment in McClain for incurring the suspension but indicated the team would not release him (more on that here).

At this point, however, it appears football is the least of his concerns. Based on this report, he needs some serious help to get his life back on track.
