Indians reportedly talking with A’s about Coco Crisp

The Cleveland Indians are looking to bolster their outfield. According to Steve Adams of MLBTradeRumors.com, the Tribe is reportedly looking at Oakland Athletics veteran Coco Crisp to supply that help.

Adams later indicated that the talks were progressing.

It’s not surprising that Crisp would waive his 10/5 rights. Per Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle, the outfielder said that he was “extremely hurt” when he believed that the A’s were benching him to prevent him from reaching 130 games played, thereby keeping his 2017 option from vesting.

It’s also not surprising that Cleveland would be in pursuit of Crisp. He came up with the Indians organization and played there from 2002-2005. Crisp also has experience with the Indians manager, Terry Francona, having played for him from 2006-2008 with the Boston Red Sox.

Crisp has had a largely uneven year in Oakland. He’s slashing at only .234/.299/.399 with seven steals. Still, he has found a decent power stroke, hitting 11 homers in 393 at bats.

The switch-hitting outfielder has hit nine of those home runs from the left side of the plate, slashing at .239/.307/.419. While batting right handed, Crisp has slashed at only .217/.267/.325.

With Carlos Santana as the Indians’ DH, Crisp would likely spend most of his time in either left field or center field. At Progressive Field, Crisp has hit .280/.327/.410. His 18 career home runs in Cleveland are second only to the 34 Crisp has hit at his current home park, the Oakland Coliseum.
