Eagles’ Carson Wentz to resume throwing Saturday

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Carson Wentz is set to take the first step towards getting back onto the field following his injury last week.

Head coach Doug Pederson told reporters Saturday morning that he was going to let his rookie toss the ball for the first time in more than a week.

Wentz suffered an injury in the first preseason game of the year when he went down hard on a blitz. The result was a hairline fracture in his ribs, and it’s been reported that he will likely be sidelined for game action the rest of the preseason.

At this point it sounds like Pederson might be inclined to let Wentz play in Week 4 of the preseason if his ribs respond well in the meantime.

Since before training camp, the head coach has maintained the stance that Wentz will likely not even dress on game days (more on that here).

That said, he had also made it known that he wanted the rookie to be “starter ready” in time for Week 1 of the regular season — a notion that is extremely far fetched at this time.

Sam Bradford is the unquestioned starter for the Eagles (for this year, anyway), and Chase Daniel is clearly the backup.

Based on Wentz’s up and down showing last week, that’s probably a good thing. And it’s not likely to change any time soon unless injuries force the team to make adjustments.
