Von Miller and Broncos have had recent ‘communication’

Von Miller

It was reported last month that Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller has not talked with team president John Elway since Denver’s Super Bowl ring ceremony.

This fits in extremely well with suggestions that Miller is upset over being handed the franchise tag and won’t play this upcoming season without an extension.

All this has also led to the possibility of Miller holding out into the 2016 season, which would be a rare move for someone of his ilk.

Now comes this report from ESPN’s Adam Caplan suggesting that Miller and the Broncos have actually had recent communication about a new contract.

In no way does this mean the two sides are nearing a deal. Instead, the continuation of dialogue is the major takeaway here.

Miller, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, would earn $14.1 million under the franchise tag should he decide to sign the tender.

The issue here is guaranteed money. If something were to happen to Miller in terms of an injury while playing under the tag, his ability to earn a ton of money over the long term would be impacted a great deal.

Not only this, Denver can also place the franchise tag on Miller again next March, setting into motion what could be yet another lengthy contract stalemate.

As of right now, the cards are stacked against the All-Pro performer. If he holds out into the 2016 season, Miller will lose out on millions. If he signs the franchise tender, there’s a tremendous financial risk involved there.
