Report: Dodgers looking at big names on trade market

Sonny Gray

The Los Angeles Dodgers are currently in first place in the wild card standings and 4.5 games behind the San Francisco Giants in the National League West.

It’s not necessarily a bad position to be in, but the team is dealing with a major injury scare to ace starter Clayton Kershaw. The three-time Cy Young winner was placed on the 15-day disabled list late last month with a bulging disc in his back.

The team then announced earlier this week that Kershaw will be shut down indefinitely until the pain in his back goes away.

Considering the Dodgers boast a .500 record in games that their ace doesn’t start, there’s definitely some belief in Southern California that reinforcements are needed.

Accordingly, the team is said to be targeting big-name players on the trade market.

If it is indeed a pitcher the Dodgers are looking at, the price will likely be steep here. Based on what the Boston Red Sox gave up for Drew Pomeranz, we can expect a bigger haul should Los Angeles target a higher-quality starter.

The likes of Julio Teheran and Sonny Gray are names that have been throw around in recent weeks on the trade block. Both would require the Dodgers to delve deep into their farm system.

The good news here is that Los Angeles pretty much has unlimited resources. It boasts a decent farm system, has valuable commodities on the 25-man roster (Yasiel Puig) and can take on any huge contract without giving it a second thought.
