Colts sign Andrew Luck through 2021

Andrew Luck

The Indianapolis Colts have signed quarterback Andrew Luck to a five-year contract extension that keeps him in Indy through the 2021 NFL season.

Luck and the Colts have been in contract negotiations for months now. Owner Jim Irsay has long contended that they would get a deal done before the season, saying it would include a  “shocking number,” and now he has delivered on his promise. Reports of $25 million per year were prevalent during the past months and he is now getting that much in his first three years.

The only surprising thing about this deal is that it comes on the heels of Luck’s worst season as a professional. He was awful when healthy and then missed nine games due to injuries.

When healthy and on his game, there is no doubt of Luck’s ability to play at the highest level. In his third season (2014), he passed for 4,761 yards with 40 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He also led his team to the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots that year.

The franchise is clearly banking on Luck to return to that form in 2016 and in the years to come.
