Larry Fitzgerald on Tyrann Mathieu: ‘He heals like Wolverine’

NFL stars

At this point it’s safe to say Tyrann Mathieu is a savage. The man who has long been known as the “Honey Badger” for his relentless attitude on the football field is now being compared to Marvel comic book hero Wolverine by teammate Larry Fitzgerald.

Mathieu, currently recovering from a season-ending knee injury, is actually having to be held back in his rehab right now. Fitzgerald related this to Dan Bickley of AZcentral.com:

“They’re having to hold him back,” teammate Larry Fitzgerald said. “He heals like Wolverine. He’s so passionate and we love him dearly. And we’re so happy to see he’s going to be ready to go for us by training camp, and he can pick right where he left off.”

Picking up right where he left off could only be a good thing for the Arizona Cardinals. Mathieu was having his finest season as a pro last year before tearing his ACL after an interception against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15. Before the injury he had racked up 89 tackles, five interceptions (one for a touchdown), a sack and a forced fumble.

Mathieu is a key cog in Arizona’s defense. He can play multiple positions on the field and is just as adept at playing the deep center as he is at blitzing off the edge or stuffing the run in a support role down by the line of scrimmage.

At this point he’s expected to be fully healthy by training camp, as Fitzgerald mentioned.

His season-ending knee injury last year wasn’t the first of his career, though. He also suffered a torn ACL/MCL in his rookie campaign. If he can stay healthy, then the Cardinals will once again feature one of the most dangerous secondaries in the NFL.

If not, then he’ll have to continue healing like Wolverine, or at the least Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, who has recovered from three ACL injuries in his career to play at a Pro-Bowl level.
