Matt Flynn throws shade at current QB contracts

It’s not often that you a hear current quarterback criticizing the contracts of other current quarterbacks, but Matt Flynn has done just that.

It’s likely that Flynn is referring to either the four-year, $72 million dollar contract that Brock Osweiler signed with the Houston Texans, or the three-year, $21 million contract (potentially $36 million) that Chase Daniel signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

In a nutshell, Flynn has a point. Osweiler has started seven career games while Daniel has started two. Given Sam Bradford’s presence in Philadelphia, it’s probable that Daniel will actually end up as a backup. That’s a lot of money to throw at people who are anything but sure things.

What makes this so ironic is the source of the criticism. Matt Flynn had all of two career starts before signing a big contract with the Seattle Seahawks prior to the 2012 season. One of those two starts was extraordinary, as Flynn threw for 480 yards and six touchdowns in the final game of the 2011 season for the Green Bay Packers.

Still, it was one start in a completely meaningless game. Flynn, of course, never started a game in Seattle, as he lost the starting quarterback job to Russell Wilson.

So, while Flynn may have a point, he’s right that he doesn’t have a lot of “room to talk” on quarterbacks being overpaid. This is about on par with Donald Trump making fun of someone for tanning a little too much.
