John Elway to Mark Sanchez: ‘Compete your butt off’ for the starting job

Other thoughts may come to mind when the words Mark Sanchez and butt are used in the same sentence. However, that is the term that the Broncos’ general manager John Elway used when he told Sanchez how to prepare for the upcoming season, per Dan Hanzus of NFL.com.

“Get in here and compete your butt off for a starting role. That’s my goal to start this coming fall and be ready to play and help this team win,” Sanchez said during his press conference Monday.

Happy to be with one of the most prestigious teams in the NFL with plenty to offer, Sanchez shared his excitement at his press conference when he found out about the trade.

“This is one of the best organizations in sports, not just football. So when I got the phone call and (Eagles GM) Howie Roseman said, ‘I’m trading you to Denver,’ I was like, ‘Denver, Colorado? Are you kidding? OK, yeah, let’s do it.’ This just an absolute dream come true.”

We can imagine Sanchez high-tailing it to the airport to catch the first flight out of Philly while making arrangement to have his personal things sent to Denver.

Given what is probably his best opportunity so far in his seven-year NFL career, Sanchez spoke about dedicated he will be to his new team.

“I’ve seen a lot in this league. I’m not married. I don’t have a girlfriend. I don’t have kids. I just want to play ball and I want to win. I really want to win, and I’m so lucky to be in a spot like this.”

Sanchez is a former 2009 first-round draft pick by the New York Jets where he spent five seasons and led the team to the playoffs in both 2009 and 2010.

In 2013-2014, Sanchez served as the backup in Philadelphia. He participated in 13 total games, completing an average of 64.45 percent of his passes for 3,034 yards, 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

The Broncos signing Sanchez is a baby step in the right direction of filling their suddenly depleted quarterback roster.
