Report: Police recommend charges against Seahawks’ Derrick Coleman

After being involved in a hit-and-run accident in October, Police are recommending that Seattle Seahawks’ fullback Derrick Coleman face criminal charges.

Coleman was initially suspended by the Seahawks for the incident in what ended up as a one-game suspension, although he missed a second game after being reinstated.

A full account of the accident was provided by Nick Patterson of Heraldnet.com can be found here.

Coleman’s attorney, Stephen Hayne interviewed Coleman after he was initially arrested.

Via Danny O’Neil of 710 ESPN Seattle, Hayne does not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

“The natural assumption that people make in situations like this is that there must be something involved here or they wouldn’t have arrested him. They wouldn’t have booked him if there wasn’t evidence in fact that he was driving drunk or under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and it’s simply not true and it would be extremely unfair to Derrick for anybody to jump to that conclusion especially since we are absolutely confident the evidence will support our contention that he is innocent of this charge.”

It appears as though Hayne was correct, as Brandi Kruse reported on Monday Coleman’s tests were said to be clean.

O’Neil quoted another attorney, Danny Vargas, offering the idea that concussions might have been the root cause of Coleman leaving the scene.

“Our belief is there is a concussion involved. He did not knowingly leave the accident.”

Despite the recommendation, Derrick Coleman still has yet to be officially charged. We may not know whether the police’s recommendation of charges are followed or not for another week.
