A portion Zack Greinke’s six-year, $206.5 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks will be going to charity. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweeted that the star right-hander will donate one percent of his annual salary to charity.
At first, this doesn’t necessarily sound like a lot of money. But, as one of Heyman’s commenters mentioned, when you view things a little differently, it sounds significantly more generous.

Indeed, $206.5 million over six years works out to an AAV of over $34.4 million. One percent of that comes out to more than $344 thousand per year, which certainly sounds better than one percent.
Over the course of the contract, one percent will equal more than a total $2 million going to charity.
Another big news piece to come from Greinke’s introductory press conference was that Greinke was “minutes away from going to another team” (per AZ Central). So, fans of other teams — notably the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers — are left to wonder how close their favorite team was to landing the All-Star pitcher.
