Report: Colin Kaepernick still struggling with reads despite simplified offense

The San Francisco 49ers were completely destroyed offensively and defensively by the Arizona Cardinals in a blowout loss of 47-7 in Sunday’s game.

Things were so bad for the 49ers late in the game that fans were shouting for Blaine Gabbert to take over. For that, quarterback Colin Kaepernick has gone on record to say that the loss was 100 percent his fault.

So what went wrong?

According to Jason Cole of the Bleacher Report, Arizona Cardinals defensive back Tyrann Mathieu said that the 49ers have oversimplified their offense so much when it comes to the passing game that it is too easy for defensive backs and defenses overall to read Kaepernick who threw four interceptions in Sunday’s game.

Additionally, Cole said that he spoke to a certain NFL defensive coach who agreed the 49ers plays are easy to read. The unidentified coach said that Kaepernick only reads half of the field and noted that all four of his picks in Sunday’s game were committed on the right side. The coach referred to the right side as Kap’s “default” spot that he turns to when he sees nothing open on the left.

For this, Cole says that Kaepernick has regressed, which has resulted in a 71.1 quarterback rating thus far in the season. Overall Cole commented that the situation for the 49ers does not look promising.

Sunday was all on Kap and he knows it.

“I nullified all the efforts of every [49ers] player on that field today.”

When Tomsula was asked if benching Kaepernick would do more harm than just letting him play through this tough streak, he said “Colin is our quarterback.”

That is at least the story for now. It should be interesting to observe Kaepernick moving forward and see if he does indeed land most of his interceptions to the right side of the field.
