Does the NFL want Players to help fund a new stadium in LA?

Yes, the NFL does want the help of its players to fund a new stadium in Los Angeles.

This isn’t a new thing, however.

In fact, the NFL has been doing this since 2011 when the new CBA was signed into effect, and the players actually wanted to do this.

When we signed the deal in 2011, we considered our role in growing the game and we review every investment opportunity and proposal carefully,” union spokesman George Atallah said, via Scott Soshnick of Business Insider

However, the NFLPA has already exhausted its funding for projects such as these until 2020, thanks to other big projects like the one happening in Minnesota right now.

The stadium plan the league is attempting to pursue at this time is the Carson, Ca. development, which has already been approved by the local government at an estimated cost of $1.65 billion. The proposed build was approved by a vote of 3-0 by the Carson city council, without any public vote.

The players would be on the hook for approximately $300 million, which would need to be approved in a vote, since the well is already dry until 2020, as mentioned above.

Both the Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams are interested in settling into the new potential location.

According to the report, the players actually do believe there is a good reason for voting such a fund into play, because “New facilities generate more revenue, which in turn raises the league-wide team salary cap.”

A bigger cap means bigger salaries.

At this point, the biggest losers of such a deal would be the citizens, who are on the hook for some of the money needed to build the stadium as a partially public-funded arrangement.
