Cam Newton on airborne touchdown: ‘I just know that my heart was in my socks’

Cam Newton

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton scored an amazing touchdown on Sunday, and he’ll remember this one for a long time.

“Superman” took flight and flipped over a Houston Texans defender to score this amazing touchdown, which was almost like the one Jerome Simpson pulled off a few years ago with Cincinnati.

Those watching surely felt their hearts skip a beat or two, and Newton seemed to be a bit nervous after the fact regarding the touchdown.

“I just know that my heart was in my socks,” Newton said after the contest, via ESPN.com. “When I was flipping, I was like, ‘Hey, I don’t know how this is going to end.’ And then I’m coming down I was, ‘I can stick this.’ I didn’t stick it. I’ve still got to get a high rating by the judge.”

Even tight end Greg Olsen was amazed by his quarterback’s touchdown.

“Yeah, I told him the Russian judge gave him a 3, but everybody else gave him a 10,'” tight end Greg Olsen said. “I guarantee the first thing he thought when he fell was he wished he’d stuck that landing, but that was pretty impressive.”

While the touchdown was quite impressive, Newton’s passing stat line was not. In a 24-17 victory over the Texans, he completed only 18-of-37 passes for 195 yards and one interception. Fortunately, Newton passed for two touchdowns and added 76 rushing yards in addition to the airborne touchdown.

Either way, at the end of the day, the Panthers got the job done and are off to a 2-0 start to the 2015 season.
