Aldon Smith officially hit with three misdemeanor charges, could face jail time

Just hours after the announcement that Aldon Smith signed a one-year deal with the Oakland Raiders, the troubled pass-rusher was hit with three misdemeanor charges, and he could face jail time if found guilty on all three counts.

Jason Cole of Bleacher Report first reported the one-year deal with Oakland.

The charges stem from his Aug. 6 arrest—the one that forced the San Francisco 49ers to release him. His arraignment is set for Oct. 6, 2015, and these are the charges he faces, courtesy of the San Francisco Chronicle’s Eric Branch:

“1. DUI with a prior conviction and a refusal to submit to a chemical test.

“2. Hit-and-run with property damage.

“3. Vandalism causing less than $400 damage.”

If Smith is found guilty of all three charges, the maximum penalty is two-and-a-half years in jail, per the report.

This timing is interesting considering Smith was just signed by the Raiders. Adam Schefter reported earlier in the day that Smith could indeed play on Sunday if Oakland is comfortable with his conditioning. The league has yet to come down with any kind of disciplinary judgement.
