Andy Reid on calling perfect play: “That’s like a good cheeseburger”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid in NFL Week 6

The contest is over. Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has already locked up Quote of the Year for the 2015 NFL season.

Reid described the feeling of calling a perfect play on offense, and his comparison is 100 percent genius. Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star provided the moment:

“‘That’s a pretty good feeling,’ [Reid] said with a wink. ‘That’s like a good cheeseburger.'”

Following a purely average 2014 season, the 57-year-old certainly hopes the offense can find a little more of those cheeseburgers, especially after adding wide receiver Jeremy Maclin via free agency. Additionally, game-breaking speedster De’Anthony Thomas and tight end Travis Kelce should receive more targets this season.

Kansas City recorded 43 passing plays of 20-plus yards, which was only good enough for a five-way tie for 23rd in the NFL. The Chiefs added a more respectable 12 rushes of 20 or more, but the lack of explosive plays limited the offense’s ability to score points.

While Alex Smith is a decent quarterback, his “game manager” reputation leads to an execution-based offensive style that favors risk-averse situations. Consequently, Reid needs to call the perfect play in order for Kansas City to slash through a defense.

It won’t be easy, but with Maclin, Thomas and Kelce taking bigger roles, hopefully Reid finds more cheeseburgers in 2015.
