Report: Russell Wilson to Skip Seahawks First OTAs This Week

It’s already well documented that the Seattle Seahawks and quarterback Russell Wilson are at an impasse in contract extension negotiations. Entering the final year of his deal, Wilson is looking to potentially become the league’s highest-paid player. Meanwhile, Seattle doesn’t seem to be willing to come close to matching that demand.

If things are split between the two sides in the negotiation room, this new piece of information could be a tad worrisome for the franchise.

According to Danny O’Neil of ESPN 710 in Seattle, Wilson is going to skip Seattle’s first OTAs of the offseason. While O’Neil did make a point of indicating this has nothing to do with the quarterback’s contract situation, it is still rather alarming. Tuesday will mark the first time in four offseasons that Wilson has missed any on-field work for the Seahawks.

Not really in much of a position to hold out, this could be just a minor power play from Wilson’s camp. The issue here, however, is that newly acquired tight end Jimmy Graham is also expected to skip the workouts for “personal reasons.” That’s a less than ideal scenario for a team that’s looking to create a relationship between its quarterback and Pro Bowl tight end.

Also expected to miss this week’s action are defensive ends Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett, the latter of whom wants a new deal from the team.

With all eyes on Wilson’s contract situation, it’s going to be interesting to see how the remainder of the summer plays out. We don’t often see quarterbacks skip workouts. And when said quarterback is in a contract standstill, we definitely need to take note.

Update: Apparently Wilson is missing the team’s OTAs to attend the funeral of Jimmy Graham’s long-time manager, Tamara Meyerson. Stand up act right there.
